昨日のブログで MacMillan Contemporary Dictionary について触れました。

この辞書は何時買ったか覚えてませんが、6.95ドルという値段です。アメリカに留学していた1985年頃かなと思います。

私も今まで多くの英語辞書を使ってきましたが、これが一番重宝します。

値段からも分かるようにペーパーバックです。書店のワゴンセールで売られるような廉価版、大衆向けの辞書でしょうか。総ページ数は1150ページ程で、まあまあ分量はありますが、大型辞書とは言えません。手に持つのもさほど苦ではありません。

一番気に入っているのは、その解説文です。無駄がなくピンポイントで、言葉の背景なども窺える文章で、まさに pithy です。

試しにこの pithy をこの辞書で引いてみましょう。

“concise and full of substance” とあります。

何となく雰囲気が分かるでしょうか？

他にも substantial な辞書はあります。例えば研究社の「新英和大辞典」はさすがによく出来ています。今手元にある英英辞典としては American Heritage があり、これもなかなか substantial です。

しかしいかんせん、これらの大辞典は大きすぎます。重すぎます。気軽にさっと引く気になれません。携帯も無理です。

他の辞書で「なんとなく」分かっても、今一つ腑に落ちない時に、この MacMillan を引いて「なるほど。そういうことか！」と思うことが度々ありました。どの単語かと言われてももう覚えてませんので残念ながら再現できませんが。

いい辞書です。

しかし絶版になっているのが残念です。

“I’M TRULY IN LOVE WITH THIS DICTIONARY. I’ve had more than two dozen English-English dictionaries, and two or three dozen for other languages, some from-into English as well. The MacMillan Contemporary Dictionary IS BY FAR the VERY BEST dictionary I’ve ever had. Every word comes with usage examples (in phrases and sentences), including actual quotations from past and present writers…. If I HAD TO JUST KEEP ONE of the many hundreds of my books, this would be it. Spending just one hour reading this dictionary gives me ten times as much education as twice that on the Internet, for example. In fact, it’s so very easy to become distracted and to lose one’s focus of attention on the Internet, but certainly not when you’re engrossed in this gem of a dictionary!”
